Caroline KyungA Ahn
On Sunday, January 29th music lovers are invited to a musical treat featuring classic works and new compositions. This concert is in addition to the ASO’s 50th Season Subscription ticket due to the intimate environment of York Hall on the campus of Anderson University.
One of the most cherished and famous pieces of orchestral literature, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, will headline the concert. The masterpiece will be paired with the music of two living composers, Estonian, Arvo Pärt and Caroline KyungA Ahn. Pärt’s mystical work Silhouan’s Song was written in 1991 as a composition for string orchestra. The work is based on a text by St. Silouan (1866– 1938), whose theme is the yearning for God. Also featured is the premiere of a commissioned by Caroline Ahn in celebration of the ASO’s 50th Season. Summer Sketches for Orchestra is divided in four 4 movements: Ocean Song, Ritual, Midsummer Night, and City Life. Each movement evokes the essence of summer.
Embracing a wide spectrum of music in style, Caroline KyungA has been writing music that are deeply inspired by natural world. Her music is described as ‘entirely delicate and lyrical’ yet has strong power that grabs audience’s attention.
Composition awards include New Music Days, Excellence in Composition at the International Brass Chamber Music Festival, honorable mention by International Alliance for Women in Music, finalist for the Respighi Composition Competition, finalist of Sioux Symphony Orchestra ‘Composer of the Year,’ and winner of the Donghak Civil War theme song competition in Korea.
Her commissions include Kaeum String Orchestra, ‘The 3Beats’ trio, Lee trio at DePauw University, Carmel Festival (IN), New York Classical Players, Inspirare Trio, IKTUS Percussion Quartet, IMTA Commissioned Composer of the year of 2015, and many more.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Caroline KyungA Ahn holds degrees from Yonsei University (BM in composition), Eastman School of Music (MM and MA in composition and pedagogy of theory) and Indiana University (DM in composition). Her compositions include orchestral, chamber, and theatrical works that have been widely performed. She is a full time adjunct professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, on faculty at Anderson University, and a composer in residence at The Classic Art and Thegenbals Music Society in Korea. She also serves as a chair for Opus Composition Festival and Commissioned Composer of IMTA and president of non-profit organization, Sound of Hope.
