Post-Filing Tips: Refunds and Payments.
INDIANAPOLIS (February 22, 2017) – Once you file your individual income tax return, you will likely be owed a refund or need to pay taxes to the state. The tax filing deadline is April 18, 2017. Here are some important tips to get you through the rest of the 2017 individual tax season.
How to Check the Status of Your Refund
If you’re eager to receive your refund this tax season, consider filing your tax return electronically. E-filed returns are processed and refunds issued in 12 to 14 days. Paper-filed returns are processed and refunds issued in about 12 weeks. Please allow for normal processing time before checking the status of a refund.
To check the status of a refund:
- Go to https://secure.in.gov/apps/dor/tax/refund/; or
- Call the automated refund line at 317-233-4018.
To check the status of your refund, you need your Social Security number, the exact amount of the refund and the tax year of the refund.
How to Pay if You Owe
If you owe tax, pay by the April 18 filing deadline. To pay online through the Indiana Department of Revenue’s secure ePay site, visit www.epay.in.gov.
If you cannot pay the full amount due, you can:
- Pay as much as possible when you file your return. Penalty and interest will be due on the unpaid amount. The more you pay when you file, the less penalty and interest you will owe. The department will send a bill within a few weeks of your filing with the remaining amount due.
- If you cannot pay any amount, file your tax return without payment. The department will send a bill within a few weeks with the full amount due plus penalty and interest.
You can qualify for a payment plan if you owe more than $100 and make a 20 percent down payment. Go to www.epay.in.gov or call 317-232-2165 after receiving a bill to establish a payment plan. Once the plan is approved, payments can be made online or by mail.
