INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Missing Persons detectives locate a 6-year-old boy and stolen vehicle, that he was asleep in at the time it was stolen.

Just after 6:20 p.m. on 12/09/2016, officers with the IMPD were dispatched to the 3000 block of N Delaware st on reports of a vehicle that was stolen with a child inside. Responding officers learned that the complainant had left her SUV running to go inside and retrieve an article and when she came back outside, the vehicle had been stolen with her 6-year-old son still inside.

Officers and detectives quickly gathered the child and vehicle description for a broadcast. Indianapolis Media Partners disseminated the information urgently to assist with the recovery of the child.

Just before 8:30 p.m., a call came into the complainant that her child and vehicle were located at the State Fairgrounds near the coliseum. Officers checked the area and located the child, who was safe. The vehicle was also located, however there was no suspect on-scene. IMPD officers are scouring the area in an attempt to locate the suspect.

The IMPD would like to remind citizens that it is not safe to leave your vehicle with your children inside or to leave your vehicle unlocked and running while unattended. Please, take your children with you, even if you believe you will only be a moment. Even if you have to wake your children up. Even if you believe your child will get upset. Do not leave them unattended in a vehicle. It is not worth the heartache or the risk.

The IMPD would like to say thank you to our Media Partners and the community who acted quickly to ensure the safe recovery of this child. Thank you for your continued support and effort in helping to make Indianapolis a safer place to work and live.
